Good point. I didn’t care much about my Compuserve e-mail address because I had e-mail through my university, but I wasn’t the typical user in that regard.

Like many users my primary use was for email with occasional referral to the forums. One of the main reasons for AOL rapidly overtaking them was not the web interface but Compuserve’s stubbornness when users asked for more friendly and memorable email addresses. By the time they decided to accomodate an address such as john_smith@compuserve.com they had already lost many customers who wanted a better email address and were not prepared to pay for two services. My Compuserve email was still working until today, which is why I happened across this post. That turned out to be a temporary hiccup.
