Thanks Aaron. Yes, that does make it sound like they had been in the building before purchasing it.

Great history. I remember them well. Used to frequent the Cherokee and Chippewa ones a lot in the 80’s.

I just want to add a little info that happened to bring me to your site. In an unrelated research project, “Velvet Freeze Inc. Mfrs of ice cream” at 3228 and 3230 Gravois is listed in a 1941 Sanborn fire insurance map I was looking at. So perhaps they were there for a bit before they bought the building. Just wanted to add to the story and say I enjoyed reading this and some other’s on your page.

Thanks,
Aaron

Interesting story about Velvet Freeze. At least one good thing about “ice cream” in StL, Ted Drewes is still around; their frozen custard likely will be there for your kids’ grandkids later in this century!

Lived in the StL area in the early ’90s, and see lots of talk in various places ’round the Internet about how so much has changed there, and not for the better. At least some things remain, and that’s always good.

Appreciate the great blog posts; keep ’em coming!

Sincerely,
Phil O

I lived in south St. Louis in the 40,s & 50’s near Grand Ave and Gravois and moved to Affton in the mid 50’s. We used to get a double dip cone for 5 cents in Affton on the way form visiting relatives still in S StL

My relatives moved from S StL to Kirkwood about the same time.and we went to Velvet Freeze out in there My family moved to Pittsburgh in 1956 and they had Isles Ice Cream stores.

Another old favorite in StL was Stake N Shake. They recently built them in places I frequent like Austin, Tx and Mobile. AL and my grands love to eat there. Even though SnS was first, they let McDonalds, Wendys ect beat them in movng national.
