Toss your web browser

Last Updated on April 16, 2017 by Dave Farquhar

Mozilla 1.1 is out. It’s faster and more stable than 1.0 (which was no slouch itself). It’s what all the cool kids are using. You know you want it.
Get it here.

In case you have no idea what I’m talking about, Mozilla is open-source Netscape. It’s nearly 100% standards compliant (it recognizes a few old Netscape-only tags), it’s very quick, but it adds a few tricks Netscape won’t give you. One, it includes facilities to block popup ads. And if an offensive ad comes up during your regular browsing, just right-click the ad and pick “Block images from this server.”

Go get it.

It’s pretty sweet. I’ve been using the 1.1b version as my primary browser for the last month. No need for I.E. here.

And there’s a new 1.2.x version of Galeon out that works with it 🙂 Galeon is great! I don’t want an email/news/chat/vegomatic client in my browser, I just want to browse the web fast.

I agree. On Windows (which I have to use at work most of the time) Mozilla’s the best browser out there (K-Meleon doesn’t stay up to date) and the Windows version allows you to just install the browser and leave mail, news, chat, HTML editing, and the Bass-o-matic no one wants behind.

The other thing I noticed about this version is that the drop-down history sorts by visited date now, rather than alphabetically, so when I start typing linuxtoday.com, sites like linuxtoday.com, linuxworld.com, etc. pop up near the top, and the time I mistyped “linuxt” and hit enter is buried. Very nice usability improvement. 🙂
