Like all of our competitors we were wanting a big order (and pcs were expensive in those days) but the payment in kind was not something we were interested in.

So you’re telling me the Soviets tried to buy Apricot computers and pay with a used submarine? I definitely want to hear more of this story!

Since a bit later than this at Apricot we were subject to the export restrictions imposed by the UK and US government on shipping hi tech goods to Russia/Soviet Union. For example we could ship PCs based on slowly clocked 286 chips when we and our competitors had already started shipping 386 based PCs. Further the rouble was a junk currency (it probably still is), so in two separate approaches we were offered a used Soviet submarine, and a forest. Neither opportunity was taken up 🙂
