A reasonable analysis of the current copyright mess (updated)

Dave Farquhar — Sat, 17 Nov 2012 13:37:03 +0000

Well, that was a disappointment. It was retracted nearly as quickly as it burst onto the scenes. Crud. A reasoned, level-headed analysis of the problems that current copyright law creates rocked Slashdot yesterday. The amazing thing is, this thing came

Apple-Intel ARM partnership makes sense

Dave Farquhar — Fri, 06 May 2011 22:25:23 +0000

Rumor is that Apple is shopping around for a new manufacturer for the SoCs that power its mobile devices. And that Intel is interested in the business. I think it makes a ton of sense. First, this doesn’t mean, contrary

The Pure Digital Flip Ultra F260W

Dave Farquhar — Sun, 12 Apr 2009 18:45:39 +0000

I bought a Flip Ultra last night. It's the most featureless video camera I've ever used, but I like it. Surprised?

For what it's designed to do, it works very well.

Taking decent photographs

Dave Farquhar — Fri, 01 Oct 2004 12:17:54 +0000

I'm not a serious photographer and I don't play one on TV. But I'm tired of looking at dark, fuzzy, tiny photographs that don't tell anything, so here's a way someone who knows nothing about photography--such as Yours Truly--can take a decent picture.

Your Fair Use rights are in danger (again)

Dave Farquhar — Sat, 24 Jul 2004 16:25:39 +0000

In case you haven't yet, you really need to read about The INDUCE Act. The potential is for any device that could be used to illegally copy copyrighted material to become illegal, and the manufacturers of said devices liable for their use.

This is wrong for so many reasons. Take the example of the crowbar.

Free graphics software for Windows

Dave Farquhar — Tue, 27 Jan 2004 23:25:00 +0000

Even people who use Windows exclusively have probably heard of The Gimp, which Linux and Unix users often proclaim as the "free alternative to Adobe Photoshop." While Photoshop is in no danger of being displaced in the industry, Gimp is certainly more than adequate for most use.

But installing it in Windows has never been easy, unless you knew a well-kept secret: the URL for Installers for Gimp for Windows. (The Windows page at gimp.org is pretty intimidating.)

The economics of color inkjets vs. color lasers

Dave Farquhar — Thu, 15 Jan 2004 05:06:39 +0000

Deciding between a color inkjet versus a color laser is tough for me. So I decided to sit down and do the math, and the results were exactly the opposite of what I expected.

Picking out a camcorder

Dave Farquhar — Sat, 09 Nov 2002 17:19:33 +0000

I had someone ask me for some advice in picking out a camcorder yesterday. I know I've talked a little bit about that before, but this field is always changing, so it doesn't hurt to revisit it.

Video editing on a shoestring

Dave Farquhar — Sun, 08 Sep 2002 19:35:10 +0000

When you go to a church like Ginghamsburg United Methodist Church in Dayton, Ohio, or St. John's Lutheran Church in Ellisville, Mo., it's easy to get overwhelmed with their video productions. They produce slick, professional, grabbing pieces that wouldn't look out of place on broadcast TV.
