My counterpoint to Forget Frugality https://dfarq.homeip.net/my-counterpoint-to-forget-frugality/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=my-counterpoint-to-forget-frugality Fri, 01 Aug 2014 11:00:35 +0000 https://dfarq.homeip.net/?p=7267 I saw a reference this week to an editorial by Ramit Sethi called Forget Frugality. While he has some good points, I think some of his advice is counterproductive and even contradictory. He argues that you should focus on earnings

Another benefit of not having debt https://dfarq.homeip.net/another-benefit-of-not-having-debt/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=another-benefit-of-not-having-debt Sat, 13 Apr 2013 11:00:30 +0000 https://dfarq.homeip.net/?p=6520 I’ve written about how not having debt gives you power, though I can’t find the particular post at the moment. But I remember when I got my first mortgage. I went to a party, and my boss was there, along

The Debt Tsunami is a gimmick, but it probably doesn’t matter https://dfarq.homeip.net/the-debt-tsunami-is-a-gimmick-but-it-probably-doesnt-matter/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-debt-tsunami-is-a-gimmick-but-it-probably-doesnt-matter Sun, 03 Feb 2013 19:13:11 +0000 https://dfarq.homeip.net/?p=6321 I saw some people passionately advocating both for and against a new method of paying off debt: The “Debt Tsumani,” which focuses on paying off debt in the order of its emotional impact on you. As someone who paid off

Don’t let debt cripple you https://dfarq.homeip.net/dont-let-debt-cripple-you/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=dont-let-debt-cripple-you Tue, 18 Oct 2011 11:17:05 +0000 https://dfarq.homeip.net/?p=4361 Sometimes people ask me for help with their finances. And I’ve seen the effects that debt can have on people. I believe having no debt is best. Having debt that you’re paying off is second-best. Festering debt, however, is crippling.

Self-Perpetuating Depression https://dfarq.homeip.net/self-perpetuating-depression/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=self-perpetuating-depression https://dfarq.homeip.net/self-perpetuating-depression/#comments Sat, 10 Jan 2009 02:20:23 +0000 https://dfarq.homeip.net/?p=1810 My longtime friend Steve brought up a good point as we discussed our job situations. He said he read that some companies may be using the current DEPRESSION (I hate that r-word, let's call things what they are) as an excuse to lay people off that they've been putting off because it would hurt morale.

The idea makes a lot of sense.

How Generation X can take this country back https://dfarq.homeip.net/how-generation-x-can-take-this-country-back/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=how-generation-x-can-take-this-country-back https://dfarq.homeip.net/how-generation-x-can-take-this-country-back/#comments Fri, 23 May 2008 02:59:18 +0000 https://dfarq.homeip.net/?p=1742 I've done some reading in recent days. First I read that GenXers aren't happy with Corporate America and the feeling is largely mutual. It appears I'm not the only one.

But I see an opportunity in this. We have a window to take this country back. And I have a plan.

I think I can do a little better. So I'm gonna try.

How to find motivation to balance your budget https://dfarq.homeip.net/how-to-find-motivation-to-balance-your-budget/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=how-to-find-motivation-to-balance-your-budget Sun, 01 Jul 2007 12:26:56 +0000 https://dfarq.homeip.net/?p=1633 This week I read a story on Get Rich Slowly about a couple who refuses to budget. The conversation ended when the person who needed to budget bragged about getting five shrubs on sale for $10 each. She didn't need them, but the deal was too good to pass up.

The road to financial independence https://dfarq.homeip.net/the-road-to-financial-independence/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-road-to-financial-independence https://dfarq.homeip.net/the-road-to-financial-independence/#comments Tue, 16 Aug 2005 11:51:19 +0000 https://dfarq.homeip.net/?p=1487 Early in The Millionaire Next Door, Danko and Stanley single out the Scottish. When my wife, Emily, read it, she said, "That explains everything about you!"

When I read it, I thought it explained everything about my two grandfathers--one was rich, one was poor, both were Scottish, and both spent their money pretty much the same way.

I've been reading a lot of these kinds of books because I'm not going to let what happened to us back in May ever happen again.
