People looking for a higher performance solution might prefer a SATA to IDE/PATA converter. At least some of them are capable of UDMA/133 operation, making them four times as fast as the SD to PATA converter. That’s less than a quarter of the maximum SATA III speed of 600 MB/sec, but still a big improvement over UDMA/33. 120 GB SSDs can be bought for under $20 new so the total cost is low.

One example: https://www.startech.com/HDD/Adapters/25in-and-35in-40-Pin-Male-IDE-to-SATA-Adapter-Converter~IDE2SAT2 That converter is a relatively expensive one from a brand name; cheaper ones are available from Chinese sources on eBay. Those links disappear after a while, which is why I didn’t provide one here.
