I went to a funeral visitation yesterday. One of my colleagues lost his dad early Friday morning. Visitation was yesterday afternoon, so I made a point to drive up there.
His dad was 80, a pillar of the community, and from the number of people there, pretty obviously a lot of people are going to miss him. That’s a good feeling. I know. I lost my dad more than seven years ago.
Alan asked me a couple of questions. “I thought I’d heard you lost your dad already.”
“Yep. In 1994.”
“I miss him. I’ll bet you still miss yours, don’t you?”
“I do.”
“And I’ll bet it comes in spurts?”
“It does.”
I didn’t have anything profound to say to Alan. He could tell I understood. I think. I hope.
“Don’t stuff your emotions. That’s the worst thing you can do. You’ll miss him, so miss him. And,” I looked over in the direction of his dad and at the crucifix sitting in the coffin, “You’ll see him again.”
