More on writing…

More on writing. It’s late so I’m not going to dwell on this too long. I frequently get e-mail trying to encourage me, talking about, “Yeah I know you’re single and you think about that a lot. Don’t worry, the right girl will come along, probably when you least expect it.”
What’s that have to do with writing? Everything. Good writers dig around, they find a strong emotion, then they milk it for all its worth. They write about it when there’s nothing else to write about. They use it for analogies. Hopefully it’s something people can relate to. And more guys can relate really well to asking a girl out than they can to baseball. Everyone’s tried to ask a girl out. Not everyone’s played a lot of baseball.

There was a time when my strongest emotions were tied to baseball. I remember feeling shock and horror when I realized girls were more important to me than baseball or softball. That’s part of growing up.

So do I think about it? Yeah. Especially when I’m tired, like now. I’ve set my sights on a girl who’s extremely ambitious, and she’s in the home stretch right now and doesn’t need the distraction. Nothing’s going to happen tomorrow. The chances of anything at all happening until December are about zero. And that’s hard. Is it harder than writing a book? No, not really.

That’s all I’m going to say, because I’m really tired. So, thanks for your thoughts and well-wishes. But I think you may be reading a little too much into it.
