IBM also had a habit of reusing overstocked parts of previous systems. PS/2 development seemed to focus quite a bit on the 80286 CPU and having it with a multi-processor bus (you mention the Model 50, but Chet Heath took a Model 60 to the set of ‘Computer Chronicles’ with an extra processor board made by Ernie Mandese for demonstrations) – trivia is that IBM never had an AT bus system based on the 386DX CPU released.

IBM also later dwelled too long on systems using the Intel 386SX CPU and derivatives, although the 386SLC, 486SLC2, and 486SLC3 turned out well…
