They did extended GPRs to 32 with AMD64. It was the REX GPR extensions. REX was short for Tyrannosaurus Rex project. Intel was called the 800 lb gorilla of the chip industry and the biggest baddest animal to take them out was the REX. I was the one who recommended the GPR count change. But MS screwed AMD by delaying release of OS until Intel x86 copied AMD64 tech.

Opterons, I guess. You could get a lot more cores on an Opteron than on a comparable Intel chip at that time.

I kept asking our Dell guys when I could get AMD processors, but it took a while.
