Another factor is that the 60W equivalents are the most likely ones to get utility subsidies, which are usually invisible or nearly invisible these days. (The only indication I’ve seen recently is a small sign at the store.)

The 40 watt equivelents are also nice for multiple bulb fixtures, I have one that really doesn’t need the 300 watts a set of 60 watt equivelents would produce. Here in Salem, OR the local power company/state had me fill out a questionaire about number of fixtures, etc. and sent me a whole box of LEDs and water flow restricters for free – I had already replaced most so now I have plenty of spares or gifts.
