If you’ve been paying any attention at all, you probably know that new PC sales are in the toilet–out of the five biggest vendors, the only one whose sales managed to hold steady in Q1 2013 was Lenovo, while the other four saw a sales decline. So now Slashdot linked to a ZDNet piece stating [...]
Don’t read too much into the PC sales drop just yet

How I turned my Nook Color into a Cyanogenmod 7.2 Android tablet
So, after most of a year, I finally revisited Cyanogenmod 7.2 on my Nook Color. Competent tablets are available for around $100 now, so perhaps this is less interesting now, but I had a Nook Color, and figured I might as well try it out before spending money on something else. I was never happy [...]

Windows 8 won’t fail just because nobody likes Windows upgrades
John C Dvorak wrote today about the great upgrade upheaval, and argued that Windows 8 is doomed to fail because it’s just going to be too hard to upgrade, and nobody likes Windows upgrades anyway. I agree on the first point but not the second.

Windows 8 comes out later this year, but I won’t be moving just yet
So Windows 8 was released today. I won’t be moving to it anytime soon. There are some people who make a habit of waiting for Service Pack 1 to be released before upgrading to a new version of Windows. The trouble is, I can think of one instance, Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 1, that [...]

Version 7 looks like just what Firefox needed
Firefox 7 is out. Chances are, if you’re reading this, you already have it, because, historically, a large proportion of my readers use Firefox or, in the past, used other Mozilla-based browsers. The last couple of Firefox versions have been yawners, and a frequent butt of jokes on Twitter. “It’s Tuesday. Time for a new [...]

DOS war stories
In honor of the IBM PC turning 30, I thought I’d tell some stories about my experiences with the operating system introduced with it, PC DOS (aka MS-DOS).

Microsoft sold 400 million Windows 7 licenses; what does it mean?
Steve Ballmer announced today that Microsoft has sold 400 million Windows 7 licenses, but anywhere from half to two-thirds of PCs are still running Windows XP and need to get with the program. He also continues to insist Windows 8 will ship in 2012, which really makes me wonder why those XP users need to [...]

Is it OK to defragment a laptop?
Yet another question from the big bag o’ Google search queries: Is it OK to defragment a laptop? Of course it is. A laptop is a computer, after all. The only question is how often, and with what.

Disadvantages of Windows 98 and 98SE
Many years ago, I wrote about the disadvantages of Windows 3.1 because I started noticing people searching for that. Now, I see people asking the same question about Windows 98. I spent 9 months of my life ripping Windows 98 apart and putting it back together again and writing about it, so I know it [...]

Short takes: Ed Felten, Sparky Anderson
Sparky Anderson died today. When I was a kid, Anderson was the manager of the Detroit Tigers and already a legend from having managed the Big Red Machine in Cincinnati in the 1970s. He was always a true gentleman in every possible regard. He actually managed longer and won more games in Detroit, but his [...]
