So, more companies are attempting to prohibit so-called deep linking, which is where you can't link to stories themselves, but rather, you have to link to the front page and the poor reader has to try to find the story you're thinking about.

So let it be known that you can link to anything on this site you darn well please. Not only do I allow it, I like it.

Fascination with old technology Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
Tuesday, September 21 2004 @ 06:00 PM CDT
By David L. Farquhar

I found this New York Times story on retro technology today.

My girlfriend tells me the 1980s are terribly hip with her students. As she was grading papers last night, I noticed one student had doodled Pac-Man on a paper, the way I remember my classmates and I doing in 1982.

I dig it.

Online support of Katie.com is inspirational but misguided Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
Saturday, August 07 2004 @ 12:27 PM CDT
By David L. Farquhar

The Register, Slashdot, and others have been posting the story of Katie.com, a personal website that's existed since 1996 but whose name was hijacked for a book about an online victim of a sexual predator, published in 2000 by Penguin Putnam.

The author has been getting harassed now, and that's misguided. Here's why.

It's that time of month again, time to Slashdot the Wikipedia Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

Slashdot published an interview today with Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales. I found it entertaining reading. Even though I'm a semi-regular contributor over at Wikipedia, I've never encountered its founder, possibly because I do my best these days to stay under the radar over there.

The problem with online streaming video Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
Friday, April 30 2004 @ 05:37 PM CDT
By David L. Farquhar

I think we may have lost a project at work today: a project to do streaming video. It's not really our fault; our offering looked just like everyone else's streaming video.

The problem is that our competition isn't everyone else's streaming video.

This is still a blog Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
Tuesday, November 25 2003 @ 12:28 AM CST
By David L. Farquhar

A year, or maybe two years ago, I wrote a piece called "This is a blog" in response to an overly full-of-himself author who said that serious professionals don't blog. It infuriated some people and got me kicked off the daynotes.com web page. I don't have anything like that to lose this time around, so I don't approach the topic with the same kind of eagerness--you're always more eager when you know someone's going to be offended and throw a temper tantrum--but since everyone and his uncle seems to be writing about John C. Dvorak's current PC magazine column, Co-opting the future, I might as well weigh in, since it's the in thing to do, and disagree with the majority knee-jerk reaction, since that isn't the in thing to do. But I won't do it to be counterculture. No, I'll disagree with the majority reaction because the majority reaction is wrong.
